Schilling Hard Cider
Grade: 88 B+
Schilling’s standard semi-sweet cider has a nice pale amber color. It smells like a sugary motts apple juice, but it doesn’t taste like it, well not completely. I think that for most Americans this is what they expect when trying cider. A slightly sweet apple drink with a kick. And in this sense, the Local Legend is like many other semi-sweets on the market. However, I think this one does have a couple of features that would push it towards the head of the pack. For starters it packs a nice one-two punch and goes from a nice acidic zing in the draw (due to its bittersharp apples) to an incredibly smooth and soft mouthfeel in the second phase. In some ways it is a bit two-faced like the sasquatch on the can. Maybe a bit surprising from a distance, but calm, chill and mellow up close. This also has just enough depth at the end to be interesting. If you don’t like semi-sweets, it is not going to be for you as the sugar is there. But if you want something that is smooth, easy to drink, and has a little bit of character, this is a great standard semi-sweet option and guaranteed to keep the good times rolling. Schilling is a go-to for easy drinking options and though this doesn’t compete with some of their other creations, it is a great option if you’re in the market for a semi-sweet American cider.
